Application Process

Admission Requirements:

Applicants for the Graduate Certificate in Greenhouse Gas Management must have a suitable bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in the following areas: engineering, physical science, or mathematics. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 out of a 4.0 scale in order to be considered for admission.  Applicants with a bachelor’s degree in a field not listed above will still be considered for admission if they have significant work experience in a relevant field. Students only applying for the Graduate Certificate program are not required to submit GRE scores. International applicants who have not completed a degree in the U.S. are required to submit English language scores with the minimum following scores: 
  • TOEFL Internet Based Test: 100 overall score 
  • IELTS:  Overall Band Score of 7.0 with no individual band scores below 6.0 t

  1. Transcripts
    • Scanned copies of unofficial transcripts are required from all colleges and universities attended, whether or not credit was earned; the program was not completed; or the credit appears as transfer credit on another transcript. 
    • Please ensure that all transcripts are readable and properly scanned. Otherwise, applicants will receive notifications requesting legible transcripts, which may delay review of their application.
    • Please do not mail official transcripts unless you are instructed to do so by a SEAS admissions officer. Admissions decisions are based on unofficial transcripts. Official transcripts will be requested only if the applicant is admitted into the program.
  2. Statement of Purpose
    • Applicants must include an essay of 250-500 words that clearly states their purpose in undertaking a certificate program at the George Washington University.
    • The essay must be written by the applicant. Any essay found to have been written by anyone other than the applicant, or plagiarized from other published materials, will be withdrawn from consideration.
  3. Résumé/CV
    • A current résumé or curriculum vitae (CV) should be uploaded with your online application.
  4. The GRE exam and Letters of Recommendation are not required for direct-entry certificate program applicants. However, please note that if you decide later to transfer credits to a full master's degree program, you will be required to submit GRE scores and letters of recommendation as part of your admissions requirements to the master's program.

Application Fees:

The application fee is $80. This must be paid by credit card (all types accepted) online upon completion of the online application form. Applications cannot be reviewed until this fee has been paid. International students don't have to pay the International student fee if they don’t physically come to the U.S. Presence in the U.S. is not required for this online program. All degree and certificate-seeking students must pay the Matriculation fee. Non-degree students don’t have to pay the Matriculation fee. International students don't have to pay the International student fee.  Students not already enrolled in a GW graduate program must pay the Application fee.
